Abstrak

Metonymy is a fundamental cognitive and linguistic phenomenon in which one entity is used to refer to another related entity within the same conceptual domain. Although traditionally regarded as a rhetorical device, cognitive linguistics views metonymy as a basic cognitive mechanism that shapes human conceptualization, categorization, and communication. This article aims to examine the nature of metonymy from a cognitive linguistic perspective by discussing its cognitive foundations, major types, relationship to prototype theory, functions in grammar and discourse, interaction with conceptual metaphor, and broader implications for cognitive linguistics. Using a qualitative descriptive approach based on a review and synthesis of relevant literature in cognitive linguistics, the study analyzes how metonymic relationships are motivated by principles such as contiguity, salience, cognitive economy, and embodied experience. The analysis shows that metonymy plays a central role in organizing lexical meaning, extending word senses, maintaining discourse coherence, and facilitating efficient communication. Furthermore, metonymy interacts closely with conceptual metaphor while remaining distinct in its within-domain mapping structure. The study concludes that metonymy is not merely a stylistic feature of language but a fundamental cognitive operation that underlies linguistic structure, conceptual organization, and human reasoning, with significant implications for language teaching, translation, computational linguistics, and cognitive science.
